Chougher Maria Doughramajian was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria. She is currently the
president of Voices of Young Refugees in Europe (VYRE) and a programme assistant at Pink
Armenia. Chougher Maria is a peacebuilder and an advocate for refugee rights and youth
empowerment, working to raise common concerns and strengthen capacities, in order to
contribute to more inclusive societies in Armenia, Syria and beyond.
Statement on how GHRUP impacted me: I grew up learning and studying only about the
Armenian Genocide and The Holocaust. Being in Toronto and comparatively studying genocide
and human rights with like-minded academics was a brilliant experience, as the learning process
was never limited to the classroom itself.
